Dear Bruce:
\JYour letter took an uncommon length of time to get here, for reasons which I
do not understand. I am glad to hear that things are going as well as they seem to
be with you. We are both well and my work has been going along smoothly, albeit
without adequate financial support. This does not bother me very much personally
but it has impaired my ability to keep my group up to strength and so things are
moving very slowly.
About the only thing new is that we have gone all out for the use of FFT's
using a single pitch period of the input wave starting at the positive-going
zero crossing before the dominant pulse.
We find that this gives us very
clean transforms so that we can locate the formant centers very accurately. To
do this we have had to spend a lot of time working on an accurate pitch detector.
We will be getting a couple of papers out on the details shortly.
While on the subject of papers I will try to get several reports in the
mail to you if I can locate copies. Unfortunately some of the ones you want are in
short supply.
As to your desire to locate staff people, I am afraid that there is not much
chance of enticing computer people to Australia at the moment. There are still
plenty of openings here in the United States and starting salaries are going
up and up. I know of one case recently where a man and wife have both just
completed their Ph.D.'s and are both going to the same firm starting at
salaries of $22,000 each. Even with the current exchange rate this is better
than you apparently can offer.
I am writing this letter on my computer terminal as I thought that you might be
interested in the kind of copy we can produce. The entire letter including
letter head is produced in this way. We have over 50 fonts available, Greek,
Russian, Hebrew, \F5Old English,\F1 German, you name it.
With best wishes to Sheila and the boys.\.
